Odysseus Atlas \u2013 K\u0119stutis Montvidas (LT) and J\u016bra Bardauskait\u00e9 (LT)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fjar\u00f0ar\u00e1 Lake, February 15 and 16, 2019, from 18:00 to 22:00.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odysseus Atlas<\/a><\/strong> is a creative initiative by artists K\u0119stutis Montvidas and J\u016bra Bardauskait\u00e9 with the island as its central theme. While in residency at Skaftfell, Odysseus Atlas has found its research subject, the elusive nature of islands, on the small islet in Fjar\u00f0ar\u00e1 Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the light festival \u201cList \u00ed Lj\u00f3si<\/a>\u201d, which is held annually in Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur in celebration of the return of the sun, Odysseus Atlas are presenting\u00a0Ultima Thule<\/em>, a subtle interactive light installation on the islet in Fjar\u00f0ar\u00e1 Lake. Their creative intent suggests perceiving this small island likewise as an Ultima Thule and invites wanderers to a spiritual journey.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultima Thule<\/em>will be visible during List \u00ed Lj\u00f3si on 15th<\/sup>and 16th<\/sup>February, from 18:00 to 22:00.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bare and meager, in some way, this islet engages the viewer at once. It looms in the midst of Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, surrounded by many questions, unanswered and not yet asked. Is it sacred or abandoned? Why is it excluded from maps? Isn\u2018t it more a symbol of itself than the true thing after all?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is believed that Pytheus (Greek geographer from 4th century BC) may have sailed as far as Iceland, to which he gave the name Ultima Thule, the \u201cfurthest island\u201d. Unfortunately his book of travels was subsequently lost and no one was able to confirm its existence.Yet the image of Ultima Thule never faded. It established a mental connection between islands and the unknown.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

K\u0119stutis Montvidas<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and J\u016bra Bardauskait\u00e9<\/a><\/strong> are artists from Lithuania, who are currently on an open-ended journey between residency programs that are situated on islands. They have been in residency at Skaftfell during January and February. Their stay is supported by the Nordic Baltic Mobility Programme.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
