Skaftfell participates in the international project Gardening of Soul: In Five Chapters<\/strong>, led by the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyne University<\/a> and House of Arts,<\/a> \u00dasti nad Labem, Czech Republic. The 3-year project is funded by the EEA Iceland Liechtenstein Norway Grants<\/a> from 2022 to 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our project partners include four non-profit organisations working with community building art practices in the Czech Republic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dobrovolnick\u00e9 centrum (The Volunteer Center in \u00dasti nad Labem); Domov Velk\u00e9 B\u0159ezno (The Velk\u00e9 B\u0159ezno Care Home, \u00dasti nad Labem); \u010clov\u011bk v t\u00edsni (People in Need); Z\u00e1kladn\u00ed um\u011bleck\u00e1 \u0161kola, Most (The Elementary School of Art, City of Most)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

as well as nine other art organizations from across the world:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gardening of Soul: In Five Chapters<\/strong> explores the agency of public artworks that engage in community building and place making. The project is particularly interested in the interactive and artistic processes bringing these artworks to life, which could be seen as forms of gardening \u2013 involving caretaking, listening, placing, growing, activating, maintaining. Outcomes of the project will include two exhibitions at House of Arts, a series of artist residencies and art commissions, a conference and a publication. Skaftfell will welcome two residency artists from Czech Republic in 2022 and 2023 and will select one Iceland-based artist who will join the residency program at House of Arts, creating a public artwork in the context of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent project activities:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

October 2022: Curator Ad\u00e9la Machov\u00e1 and artist Jan Krti\u010dka visit Skaftfell as representatives of the Jan Evangelista Purkyne University. Collectively we worked on Skaftfell\u2019s contributions to the project\u2019s first exhibition in House of Arts in December 2022, and on artist residencies and art commissions planned in the context of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

October\/November 2022: Jan Krti\u010dka joins the Skaftfell residency program as artist in residence, developing his research on a new sound based artwork with recordings from Iceland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 9, 2022: Artist talk by Jan Krti\u010dka at Skaftfell<\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 5-9, 2022: Visit of Skaftfell\u2019s project manager to \u00dasti nad Labem. Work meeting with the other project partners and opening of the first exhibition on December 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dec 7, 2022 \u2013 Feb 2023: Exhibition at House of Arts \u201cGardening of Soul: An Introduction\u201d<\/a>. Skaftfell participates with two installations, one documenting the interactive sound sculpture Tv\u00eds\u00f6ngur by Lukas K\u00fchne (2012), including photographs by Gu\u00f0mundur Oddur Magn\u00fason (Goddur), a visual simulation by Oliver McIntyre, a text by Lukas K\u00fchne and a sound piece by Jan Krti\u010dka, recorded within Tv\u00eds\u00f6ngur in collaboration with the musicians Joanna Skowronska and Rafal Kolacki. The second installation presents a book documenting the first ten years of the participatory art project Hafnargar\u00f0ur Community Garden in Sey\u00f0isfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur (2012 \u2013 ongoing).
