📣 Skaftfell tilkynnir nýja samstarfsaðila í rekstri Skaftfells Bistró og boðar enduropnun veitingastaðarins í byrjun maí. Nýir framkvæmdastjórar, Eva Jazmin, Sesselja Hlín, Garðar Bachmann, Hjörvar og Sóley Guðrún, búa yfir margra ára reynslu af matreiðslu og móttöku gesta. Undir stjórn yfirmatreiðslumannsins Garðars Bachmann mun Skaftfell Bistró bjóða framsýnan matseðil með hefðbundnum íslenskum mat með frumlegum snúningi.
Í samræmi við reglur Skaftfells um sjálfbærni og virðingu fyrir náttúrunni verður lögð áhersla á fersk, staðbundin matvæli, þar á meðal fisk, kjöt, grænmetisrétti, austfirskan bjór og lífræn vín. Veitingastaðurinn mun vegsama hafið og landið með því að styðja og kynna staðbundnar vörur og framleiðendur þeirra. 🌱

————

On Friday, February 10, from 17:00-18:00 Lucia Gašparovičová presents “26 minutes” at Skaftfell. The installation is part of List í Ljósi art festival.

About "26 minutes": 26 minutes is the length of exposure – exposure of photosensitive paper inside a camera obscura to the light. This happened twice a day for two months, the camera obscura placed on a bench situated towards the harbor and the apparent movement of the sun in the Icelandic town Skagaströnd. “26 minutes” is a space-time recording and the visual materialization of the wide range of lighting conditions in Iceland during its short light days in January and February. 1300 minutes is the total time a person spent at the same spot, standing near a bench and waiting to record the four-dimensional world that every day cares about the same equal and unequal things.

Lucia Gašparovičová is a Slovakian visual artist based in Bratislava, and currently artist in residence at Skaftfell Art Center.
Lucia’s residency at Skaftfell is supported by a grant from Culture Moves Europe, implemented by the Goethe Institut, and the Slovak Art Council.

The exhibition Composition in Five Movements —opening February 10 —features videos by five artists, including Steina (Icelandic, born 1940) pictured here in a clip from her video Warp (2000).

Steina is renowned for her pioneering work in video art and video-effects technology, a long-time collaborator with her husband, Woody Vasulka (Czech, 1937-2019). In Warp, Steina recorded herself dancing through an empty room, her body distorted as she moved.

The video was created using a software program developed by Steina working in close collaboration with Tom Demeyer at STEIM, in Amsterdam in 1997. The software program enables the manipulation of uncompressed video in real time. In the case of Warp, the video tracks human movements through the optical-mechanical manipulations of the machine. As such, the work is part of Steina’s investigations into the development of a new visual language, one that playfully engages the tensions between natural realism and the technological artifice.

    PODCAST LAUNCH:
The Nordic Alliance of Artists’ Residencies on Climate Action (NAARCA) announces the launch of its new podcast TESTING GROUNDS

The introductory episode of TESTING GROUNDS will be released today, on January 27, 2023, with new episodes available on the last Friday of each month. To subscribe and listen, visit naarca.art/testing-grounds-podcast/ or search for “Testing Grounds” in your favourite podcast app.

As the climate crisis accelerates, how can artists’ residencies be testing grounds for new – and better – ways of living and working? A new, 8-part podcast series brings together artists, researchers and activists from across the Nordic region and Scotland to explore this question.

Presented by the Nordic Alliance of Artists’ Residencies on Climate Action (NAARCA), each episode in the series looks at the crisis through the lens of one artists’ residency. In the first episode, we travel deep into the Arctic Circle, to Longyearbyen – home of Artica Svalbard – to hear a conversation between an architect and an anthropologist about how climate change is affecting people’s relationship with their built environment.

TESTING GROUNDS is produced and edited by Katie Revell and includes original music by Loris S. Sarid and artwork by Jagoda Sadowska.

ABOUT NAARCA
NAARCA is a collaboration between seven artists’ residencies: Cove Park (Scotland), Saari Residence (Finland), Artica Svalbard (Norway), Art Hub Copenhagen (Denmark), Baltic Art Center (Sweden), Skaftfell Art Center (Iceland) and Narsaq International Research Station (Greenland). We are working together to develop, test and communicate new ways of living that are ecologically, socially, mentally and financially sustainable. We believe that artists’ residencies are exceptional institutions within the arts sector: safe environments for experimentation, where private, professional and public life intertwine.
