The exhibition Cheryl Donegan & Dieter Roth considers Dieter Roth as an artist and publisher of books alongside the printed textiles and paintings of New York-based artist Cheryl Donegan.
Roth developed the use of the book as a total art form. His book works were initially often formal and geometric in nature, however, latterly they became more diaristic and he would use more found and repurposed images from his own work and other publications such as comics, newspapers and advertising. This exhibition will trace the innovative uses that he employed and utilised in publishing and printing.
Artist Cheryl Donegan became known in the 1990s for her conceptual videos. Recently, she has been developing a new body of work using digital production techniques to create paintings and printed textiles which have been made into clothes. In this new approach, it can be seen that Donegan is using both the principals and techniques of publishing as an integral component within her practice. Her method provides a fascinating way to highlight how Dieter’s approach can be seen to relate to the work of contemporary artists. For the exhibition, Donegan will present recent work in the form of clothes, paintings, videos, printed textiles, and zines.
