Nina Tobien is a german artist who lives and works in Berlin. She is a painter who also works with ceramics and textiles. Researching and developing her own artistic materials lead to a close collaboration with the nature that surrounds her. She also works with atmospheric agents – snow, rain, the rays of the sun and moon and the wind. The realisation of her artistic work arises from the tension between materiality and immateriality.

Nina Tobien studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main (Offenbach University of Art and Design) and graduated from the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste – Staedelschule (Frankfurt Academy of Fine Arts) as a masters student of Michael Krebber.

She has received working grants and residency fellowships from selected institutions such as the Hessische Kulturstiftung, the Kulturamt Frankfurt am Main and the Hessisches Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst. Her works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, most recently at the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main.

During her time at Skaftfell she is working on her ongoing research project TINY TRACES – an archive of materials, textiles, patterns and their stories as well as a group of paintings that is based on this research.
