Composer and artist Nathan Hall will transform the house Brekka (Austurvegur 44b) into an installation called FOSSHÚS. The three floors will have sound and visual works that can be discovered. Works include underwater recordings, musical graphic scores, watercolors, and video performances. Works have all been made in the last two months while on residency at Skaftfell. They are inspired by Dvergasteinn, Buðaráfoss, Steinasafn Petru, and the recent passing of the artist’s grandmother.
The house will be quite dark; only a few people are allowed in at one time for safety, and for keeping the sound works audible to experience. There will be someone to help you navigate the space. After you tour FOSSHÚS please join us next door in the Skaftfell Bistro for a reception.
Nathan Hall uses music as an artistic medium to explore a variety of fields including science, nature, the fine arts, history, and sexuality. Many of Nathan’s works are based on his travels, mapping out a geography of his experiences while taking the listener on their own personal journey. He is a former Fulbright Fellow to Iceland, and has a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He currently lives in Denver, Colorado.
During Nathan’s residency at Skaftfell, he has documented sights, sounds, and activities in Seyðisfjörður and East Iceland, and has used those moments as inspiration for a new set of small works in sound, music, and video. He is working on interpreting elements of nature and landscape into musical graphic scores, which can be admired as visual art but also performed as music.
