As was stated in the Icelandic media recently, Skaftfell Center for Visual Art has been in financial difficulties this year, and this has led to great uncertainty about the continuation of its operations. Following a good conversation between Skaftfell and the Minister of Education and Culture this autumn, the ministry agreed to grant emergency funding to Skaftfell. This means that we can keep the art center’s activities uninterrupted until the end of the year. We are, of course, deeply grateful for this support. For an institution like Skaftfell it is crucial to be able to work continuously on projects that we have committed to, and to develop future projects and strategies, especially during the time when the new joint municipality in East Iceland is being formed. We are now at a crossroads in the cultural sector in East Iceland and it is vital for Skaftfell to be able to take part in discussions with elected representatives about the future of Skaftfell itself and of all the other cultural activities in the region.
