Skaftfell Art Center
Skaftfell Art Center serves as the regional visual art center of East Iceland, fostering and presenting contemporary art on an international level. Located in a timber-frame building constructed in 1907, Skaftfell houses an exhibition space, art library, office, meeting room, guest quarters, and the Skaftfell Bistró. Skaftfell hosts an active artist residency program with both thematic and self-directed residencies. Artists in residence have access to Prentverk Seyðisfjörður, a printmaking workshop operated by a collective of local arts organizations.
Er ekki lengur | No Longer | لَمْ تَعُدْ Nermine El Ansari November 30 – December 17, 2023 In this exhibition the viewer hears the voice of the Sudanese poet, writer, and activist Moneim Rahama (presently exiled in France), who reads “No Longer,” a poem written on October 23. The voice recording is layered with a composed sound work. The immersive installation includes a montage of images El Ansari created in response to both personal experience and stories told by people facing forced displacement with whom she has worked closely.
The Skaftfell Bistró is located on the first floor of the Skaftfell Art Center, at Austurvegur 42, in Seyðisfjörður. The restaurant offers an innovative menu that reinterprets traditional Icelandic fare with an innovative twist. A section of the restaurant pays homage to the Swiss-German artist Dieter Roth (1930-1998), who lived and worked in Seyðisfjörður at various times in the last decade of his life. In addition to original works by Roth, the restaurant showcases the work of contemporary artists of East Iceland. http://skaftfellbistro.is
