Garðar Bachmann Þórðarson – Monuments

Current
West Wall Gallery (Bistró)

This series is about snow piles created during winter maintenance on the roads of Seyðisfjörður. They are created when heavy machinery clears snow from roads, but take on forms reminiscent of sculptures—a kind of monument shaped by repetition, force, and necessity.

The people who operate the machines are locals, but their work (the Skaflar) creates these forms that are temporary and ever-changing, and then continue to be shaped by weather and human intervention.

By photographing the snow piles, I frame them and direct attention to them, raising questions about authorship and attention. Who creates the work—the excavators, the environment, or the photograph itself.

Garðar Bachmann Þórðarson is a photographer and chef living and working in Seyðisfjörður. He has published a book Brak & Brestir, Food and people on board the trawler Gullver NS12.
