To conclude the exhibition Roman Signer: Icelandic Works, Skaftfell is screening the 1996 film Signers Koffer [Signer’s suitcase]. The director,  Peter Liechti, follows Roman Signer on a personal odyssey through the landscapes of Switzerland, Poland, Italy and, of course, Iceland. These places are not merely a background for Signer’s travels but also the sites for the creation of Signer’s distinctive, action infused, art works. The film revels in the humour and absurdity of Signer’s work and provides an insight into his relationships with these places. Iceland in particular is shown as a place in which its inhabitants have developed distinctive forms of interaction with their landscapes such as building geothermal powerplants, living with an ever changing volcanic topography, and the social importance of outdoor swimming pools.
