What to bring?
Warm, waterproof clothes, hats, gloves, hiking boots or other good waterproof shoes / boots. Private computers, cameras, video recorders etc. as needed. European citizens is advised to apply for and bring the European Health Insurance Card.

How to get there?
From Europe the airlines Icelandair as well as WOW AIR have frequent flights from various destinations to Keflavik, Iceland: www.icelandair.com, www.wow.is

From Keflavik is about 50 minutes drive to the capital of Reykjavik, where the domestic airport is. Buses are scheduled for every flight from Keflavik to Reykjavík or a private transfer can be arranged for a group.

There is a possibility to book a overnight in Reykjavik via the Icelandic Artists association www.sim.is

From the domestic airport in Reykjavík there are flights to Egilsstaðir Airport with Air Iceland www.airiceland.is. Be sure to estimate minimum 2 1/2 hours for transit from arrival at Keflavik airport to the departure for Egilsstaðir from the domestic airport in Reykjavik.*

Egilsstaðir is 25 minutes drive from Seyðisfjörður, over the mountain pass Fjardarheiði.

*From Egilsstaðir is a bus to Seyðisfjörður, please think of booking a flight that has a bus connection to Seyðisfjörður! NB: Skaftfell does not have the possibility to pick up in the airport, and the bus only has few departures pr. day

Another possibility is to come with the Ferry Norræna www.smyril-line.com which sails directly to Seyðisfjörður from Hirshals in Denmark.


When I get to Seyðisfjörður, how do I get around?
Since the town is small (population of 700) and it only takes few minutes to get from one end of the town to the other, hence there are no public transportation within Seyðisfjörður.

Where is Hóll/the Norðurgata resdency in relation to the Skaftfell building? How far away?
Hóll and Norðurgata is less than a kilometre, around 10 min walk from Skaftfell. See the map at the bottom of this page.

Is there internet at the residency?
The Skaftfell building has wireless internet. The residencies Hóll and Norðurgata has wireless internet as well, with a download limit of 150GB pr. month.

Am I the only artist at Skaftfell/Hóll/Norðurgata for the period?
Artists in private residency are alone in a house or with their own group, if it was a group/family application. Artists in Shared Residency have a private room but share a house with one other artist. The Short Term residency at Skaftfell has two private rooms so up to two artists are sharing the facilities at any give time.

Can guests come and visit for short periods?
In the Private Residency guest can visit for short periods. The Shared and Short term residencies do not allow for guests staying at the residency.

What sort of grocery/food store(s) are in Seyðisfjörður?

There is only one grocery store in Seyðisfjörður: Samkaup Strax. More extensive shopping can be done in Egilsstaðir.

What sort of art supply stores are there in Seyðisfjörður?There are no specific art supply stores in Seyðisfjörður. in Egilsstaðir there is a hardware store „Húsasmiðjan“ with a small paint, brush and canvas section and the shop „A4“ sells paper and basic drawing utensils. The printshop Héradsprent in Egilsstaðir also has a selection of paper, colours and basic tools besides facilitating printing. It is possible to send them a file by email and have them send printouts via post to Skaftfell. Furthermore it is relatively easy to have things sent from shops in Reykjavík.

What facilities are there in Seyðisfjörður that could be useful to know about ?
The Creative Map of Seyðisfjörður points out many places that could be of relevance and inspiring in the residency period.

Do I have to bring bed linen with me?
No, the houses are all necessary equipped with bed linen and towels for 5 persons. (Even more if wished)

Is the confirmation fee to be paid extra?
No, it covers the first month of the rent and is not refundable.

Is there a possibility to exhibit or engage in other activities during the stay?
Yes, artists in residence can apply to exhibit in a stripped gallery-/project space; the Bookshop – projectspace. We also arrange artists talks, lectures, workshops and other activities, all optional for the artists in residence. Artists in residency are also encouraged to engage in the Art Class held by Skaftfell for the older primary school classes in town.
